Our Impact
We strive to generate positive impact in the lives of our smallholder farmers and our customers. Throughout everything that we do, we aim to spread our impact as far as we can. Our daily business is working with smallholder farmers, who we not only train on best practices, but also buy back from at fair market prices.
As a result, farmers experience better production and increased incomes. This encourages economic self-reliance and increased livelihoods. In fact, many of the farmers we work with mention financial independence as one of the most important achievements that Kenya Poultry Farmers has made them accomplish.
Most of our smallholders are women and youth. By working with them and incorporating them into our programs, we train them on best farming practices, business knowledge and financial literacy. We help them push their production to higher numbers and, as a result of that, gain better livelihoods. One typical aspect of poverty is unpredictable income.
Farmers in East Africa often have to wait a long time for payment, or sometimes never receive payment at all from their buyers. This is why we make sure that we pay our farmers on time: contrary to many companies in Kenya that are exploiting farmers, we have clear payment dates and we never pay late. This gives our farmers an opportunity to plan their finances well and to escape poverty.
Besides smallholder farmers, we also work very closely with the “chicken mama’s”. These mama’s sell fried chicken in the slums. They buy a big part of our produce and we pride ourselves on our good working relationship with them.
Every morning, we make sure our chicken supply comes in very early so that they are able to prepare the chicken before they go to the markets. We train their business skills and make sure they get our produce at a fair price, so that they are able to gain increased incomes.
